Introduction to Savings & Investing: Key Lessons from Our Women & Money Financial Literacy Workshop
At Connecting Stories, we believe that financial empowerment begins with knowledge. When women have access to practical financial education, they are better equipped to make informed decisions, build resilience, and create brighter futures for themselves and their families.
As part of our Women & Money: Practical Financial Workshops for Women, delivered in partnership with The Money Charity, our third session focused on one of the most important aspects of financial wellbeing: investing.
Facilitated by Lola Okuneye, the session introduced participants to the fundamentals of investing, helping to demystify concepts that can often feel intimidating. Through engaging discussions, practical exercises, and interactive quizzes, attendees gained greater confidence in understanding how investing can become a valuable part of their long-term financial journey.
Understanding the Difference Between Saving and Investing
One of the first topics explored was the distinction between saving and investing.
Saving helps us prepare for short-term goals and unexpected expenses by keeping money in easily accessible accounts. Investing, on the other hand, involves putting money into assets with the expectation that it will grow over time.
Participants discussed how both saving and investing play important roles in achieving financial security, and why understanding when to use each strategy is essential.
The Power of Compound Growth
A standout moment from the session was the discussion on compound growth.
Using practical examples, Lola demonstrated how even modest investments can grow significantly over time when returns are reinvested. This highlighted one of the greatest advantages of starting early: allowing time to work in your favour.
The session reinforced an important lesson—building wealth is often less about making large investments and more about consistency, patience, and long-term thinking.
Understanding Risk Before You Invest
Every investment carries some level of risk, and understanding that risk is crucial before making any financial decisions.
Participants explored questions such as:
- What level of risk am I comfortable taking?
- What are my financial goals?
- How long can I leave this money invested?
- Do I fully understand the investment I’m considering?
Rather than viewing risk as something to avoid entirely, attendees learned the importance of understanding it, managing it appropriately, and making informed decisions based on their personal circumstances.
Setting Financial Goals
Successful investing begins with having a clear purpose.
During the workshop, participants reflected on their personal financial goals, whether that meant saving for a home, building an emergency fund, preparing for retirement, supporting children’s education, or achieving greater financial independence.
Having defined goals provides direction and helps individuals make investment choices that align with their long-term aspirations.
Building Confidence Through Financial Knowledge
For many women, investing can seem complex or inaccessible.
One of the most valuable outcomes of the session was helping participants recognise that investing is not reserved for financial experts. With access to reliable information and a willingness to learn, anyone can begin building the knowledge needed to make informed financial decisions.
Through quizzes, discussions, and real-life examples, participants developed greater confidence in asking questions, evaluating opportunities, and thinking critically before investing.
Practical Takeaways from the Session
Participants left with several actionable lessons they can apply immediately:
- Understand the difference between saving and investing.
- Start investing with clear financial goals in mind.
- Learn how compound growth works and why starting early matters.
- Research thoroughly before making investment decisions.
- Consider your personal risk tolerance.
- Focus on long-term financial wellbeing rather than short-term gains.
- Continue building financial knowledge through trusted educational resources.
