Women and Pensions in the UK: Key Lessons Every Woman Should Know About Planning for a Financially Secure Future
For four weeks, women from different backgrounds came together to strengthen their financial knowledge through our Financial Literacy Programme for Women.
Our grand finale focused on a topic that many people delay thinking about but one that can have a significant impact on future financial wellbeing: pensions and retirement planning.
Led by Janice Cowling, Susan Sutherland (both experts from MoneyHelper) and Victoria Copeland (Money and Pensiond Services), the session explored why retirement planning matters, why women often face unique financial challenges, and what practical steps can be taken today to build greater financial security tomorrow.
Here are some of the biggest lessons from the session.
Why Women Need to Think Differently About Retirement Planning
One of the most important discussions centred on the reality that women’s financial journeys are often different from men’s.
Many women experience career interruptions due to maternity leave, caring responsibilities or reduced working hours. These life events can affect earnings, pension contributions and long-term retirement savings.
The session highlighted that while these circumstances are common, understanding their impact is the first step towards making informed financial decisions and planning ahead.
Understanding the Gender Pension Gap
Participants learned about the gender pension gap and the factors that contribute to it.
These include:
- The gender pay gap
- Career breaks
- Part-time employment
- Caring responsibilities
- Lower lifetime pension contributions
Although progress continues to be made, these differences can accumulate over many years, making early planning even more important.
Know the Different Types of Pensions
The facilitators explained the different types of pensions available and how they work together to support retirement income.
Participants gained a clearer understanding of:
- State pensions
- Workplace pensions
- Private pensions
Understanding these options enables individuals to make better-informed decisions about their future financial wellbeing.
Make the Most of Workplace Pension Contributions
The session also explored the benefits of workplace pension schemes and automatic enrolment.
Many people underestimate the value of employer pension contributions, yet these contributions can significantly increase retirement savings over time.
The key message was simple: if you’re eligible, understand your pension scheme, review your contributions regularly and take advantage of the benefits available to you.
Don’t Lose Track of Your Pension
Changing jobs throughout a career can sometimes result in forgotten pension pots.
Participants were introduced to practical tools that can help trace old pensions and bring together information that may have been lost over the years.
Keeping track of pension savings helps individuals gain a clearer picture of their future retirement income.
Stay Alert to Pension Scams
Protecting your savings is just as important as growing them.
The facilitators shared practical advice on recognising pension scams, avoiding fraudulent offers and verifying information before making important financial decisions.
The reminder was clear: always seek guidance from trusted organisations and regulated professionals before taking action.
Financial Wellbeing Goes Beyond Retirement
The conversation extended beyond pensions to financial wellbeing as a whole.
Financial confidence is built through informed decision-making, planning ahead and knowing where to access reliable support when needed.
Participants were encouraged to take small, consistent steps towards improving their financial future rather than feeling overwhelmed by long-term planning.
You Don’t Have to Navigate It Alone
One of the most valuable takeaways from the session was the reminder that support is available.
Whether it’s understanding pensions, exploring retirement options or making informed financial choices, trusted organisations such as MoneyHelper provide free guidance to help people make confident decisions.
Knowing where to find credible information can make a significant difference throughout every stage of life.
Looking Ahead
Financial confidence isn’t built in a single workshop. It’s built through continuous learning, informed choices and a willingness to take the next step.
We hope this programme has inspired many more women to start planning today for a more secure tomorrow.
Thank you for being part of the journey.
